Cognitive Functioning: Huperzine-A

Highlights To Consider

Those who struggle with ADD/ADHD and similar issues should seriously consider Huperzine-A to improve memory, enhance concentration,  sustain focus, gain more attention to relate better to others and get more work done.   I use it myself to for moderate ADD/ADHD and find it to be very helpful.  I may have a little coffee the same day to accentuate the positive effects of both.  It is viewed among the “non-competitive inhibitors of AChE” (Pohanka & Dobes, 2013).  Because Huperzine-A has a longer half life than most supplements or pharmaceuticals (Tomen, 2017), it is generally best to take the dose early in your day and only 1x day and only 2-3 times per week.  Also, be sure that some other agent is not already increasing the baseline of acetylcoholine or preventing its breakdown.  By slightly increasing or sustaining acetylcholine, one’s memory and cognition are generally improved.  =========================================================================Too much acetylcholine can produce negative side effects.  Stay within recommended dosage.=========================================================================  Some people may wish to start with very low doses (i.e. 1/4 or 1/2 of a capsule) just to be safe and to find the most optimal amount.  I take standard 200 mcg capsule. Side effects may include nausea, insomnia and vivid dreaming.  Many report this supplement should be cycled, that is to take it for certain periods (maybe a few weeks) and to put it aside for other periods.  Some may want to take it on certain occasions or intermittingly for short periods without any cycling plan but not for a long duration before taking a break.   This has been my approach as I may choose to use other agent(s) or just have coffee / tea or nothing in a given interval.  It is important to be aware of one’s homeostatic reserve, optimal energy in various contexts and to avoid overtaxing adrenal glands.  Our quality of life is based on making very fine tuned, sometimes complex judgements about the quality, intensity and duration of cognitive altertness we need to employ at any given time for a specific set of tasks.  Sometimes there is no substitute for one’s natural state and sometimes we need to focus on replenishing our homeostatic foundations and perhaps  detoxing and cleansing. “Huperzine A is used for Alzheimer’s disease, memory and learning enhancement, and age-related memory impairment. It is also used for treating a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis, for increasing alertness and energy, and for protecting against agents that damage the nerves such as nerve gases.” (Huperzine-A, 2018). Notice:  You should consult with your primary provider or advanced health specialist before trying Huperzine-A or any other product from Double Wood Supplements.  In addition, do your own research and be cautious with your health.  Keep in mind that every person has a unique metabolism, orientation towards consumption and interface with the environment.  Test your constitution and make your own best educated decision. –Richard S. Huperzine A is not only an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor but has has been found to increase acetylcholine levels in the rat brain. It also increases norepinephrine and dopamine, but not serotonin levels.
